In 1994, Jimmy Bean's Cafe was moved from San Francisco to 6th and Gilman in Berkeley. It has since become the place to go for inexpensive but really good food. Open 7 days a week, Jimmy Bean's has a vast menu of American, Southwestern and Middle Eastern favorites for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is served all day and the nightly $15, 3-course dinner special is legendary.
The atmosphere is casual, there are no white tableclothes, but the food is locally procured, sustainable and organic. As one reviewer put it:
Lovably garagelike Jimmy Bean’s marries the blue-collar soul of Gilman Street to a foods-of-the-world culinary sensibility that’s pure Berkeley. Show up at breakfast for silver-dollar pancakes and omelets garnished with cumin-laced green chutney, or at lunch for the delectable lamb sandwiches and jerk-chicken lavash. Dinner is mellower, without the crush of hipsters and mechanics that makes this place feel essential to the neighborhood.
We take great pride in maintaing a friendly place where you can always enjoy a great meal with friends or by yourself with consistently great service.
